Joe G3: My senior year of high school, my partner Zoe “Epic Zoe” on Instagram, was doing it and she introduced me to the programs and how it all works. Also, my substitute teacher gave me my first program, FL (Fruit Loops) studio and ever since then I’ve fallen in love with music.
Shéola Kiko: Do you have any musical background that helps you when you produce?
Joe G3: Around the 3rd grade I started playing the trumpet for 4 years and I stopped right before high school because I got braces *laughs* because it hurt. When that happened I fell back from music in general.
Shéola Kiko: When you get into the studio and you’re ready to Werk what is your producing style?
Joe G3: Watching a movie because I watch movies a lot the soundtrack will inspire me and something will come over me to start producing music on FL Studios, I’ll go through a couple sounds and make the pattern and it goes on through there.
Shéola Kiko: What music are you listening to now?
Joe G3: A lot of rap, a lot of hip hop, recently Future, Lil Wayne of course being from New Orleans he was the first person I listened to rap growing up. A lot of XXXtentacion, R.I.P. X. I get inspired by everyone. I listen to a lot of everything, I get inspired from everybody because I believe that if you make music, you know that’s what you love to do and I love to make music so I try to connect to everyone that makes music no matter what genre it is or what you do.
Shéola Kiko: As a Producer from Louisiana how does that influence your creating style for beats?
Joe G3: It’s really hard sometimes because Louisiana beats sound different than Atlanta or L.A., up north like Chicago beats. Being from hear a lot of people ask me, ‘I need beats’ and I ask them, ‘What they need?’ [I’ll show them what I have] they want a down south beat, a Mannie Fresh style beats, Louisiana beats then I have to break it to them that the kind of beats I make are my own style and I hope they get inspired by that.
Shéola Kiko: What do you think of the music today creeping in that “Louisiana Bounce” like Drake’s song, “Nice for What” and O.T. Genasis & Beyoncé song, “Everybody Mad”?
Joe G3: I feel like we’re finally getting the recognition we deserve, but at the same time it’s like it took so long to get mainstream. No matter what city you’re in the girls love New Orleans Bounce, but I appreciate them putting it out there for everyone to listen. It’s not really culture vulture at all because he put his own spin on it.
Shéola Kiko: What Challenges you as a producer to keep growing?
Joe G3: I face a lot of challenges throughout the day from trying not to get beat blocked, listening to other music trying to get inspired and everything that happened with [Hurricane] Katrina, a lot of things happened before I started making beats and before I became a producer *sighs* a lot of stuff. I always take anything bad that happens and try to see the silver lining because no matter how bad it may seem or how bad I feel like the day is going I woke up blessed with a breath of fresh air and someone else doesn’t. So I try to not take anything for granted.
Shéola Kiko: What is your tip for young producers coming out now?
Joe G3: Get you a team, keep pushing keep, keep working hard and find you a circle because I promise you it’s going to be 10x harder to do it by yourself, but with a team, let alone a team of real people that’s around you. Level your craft and you can’t fake it you actually have to love what you’re doing and be willing to do anything for it no matter how long it gets there. Some people don’t realize how long it takes to actually make it, they think that working for one month they’ll be able to make it and that’s not the reality of it. Show more6 years ago
